Humility Comes Before Honor

Overview: 1 Samuel 19-20, Luke 14:25-35

As Saul realizes that the Spirit of the Lord has left him and has anointed David, he seeks to kill him to preserve his own legacy. The Spirit of God opposes and humiliates Saul while protecting David.

In Luke, as Jesus continues his journey to Jerusalem, he warns the crowds about the cost of discipleship.

Observation and Activation

God “opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). Saul’s pride leads to opposition from God, while David’s humility is what qualifies him to be king.

Jesus warns that to be a disciple, you must love your family less than Him, take part in His suffering, and surrender everything else in your life to Him. This is a hard teaching that should cause us to reflect. Is your relationship with God the most important thing in your life, or life itself? Every good thing flows from that relationship with Him.
