The Lord is Merciful

Overview: 2 Samuel 21-22, Luke 20:27-47

2 Samuel ends with an epilogue recording some important events from David’s reign. Stories of a famine, heroes of the war with the Philistines, and a psalm of David recount how God had rescued him from his enemies.

In Luke, the Sadducees and the scribes question Jesus’ authority. Jesus answers them with great wisdom and knowledge.

Observation and Activation
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.” – 2 Samuel 22:2-3

David’s song in 2 Samuel 22 is almost identical to Psalm 18. He exalts the Lord, calling God his deliverer, fortress, and rock in which he takes refuge. David’s personal song has been adapted to serve as a public hymn in Psalm 18

Jesus warned of the hypocrisy of the scribes, cautioning that God is more concerned with our heart than our appearance. Ask God to search your heart, and to point out if you are wanting to truly please the Lord, or maintain a good image.
