Persevere through Persecution
Overview: 2 Samuel 23-24, Luke 21:1-19
The final two chapters of 2 Samuel serve as an epilogue to David’s life and reign. A psalm, a list of his heroes, and an ill-advised census conclude the story of David.
In Luke 21, Jesus begins with an example of total sacrifice. He describes what to expect as the end times draw near, promising that those who persevere in faithfulness will be rewarded.
Observation and Activation
“You will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But not a hair of your head will perish.” - Luke 21:17-18
Taking a census showed a lack of trust in the Lord on David’s part. But as a man after God’s own heart, David repents. The Lord used the situation for good by providing a site for offerings that would eventually become the temple built by Solomon.
Jesus foretells the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. as a pattern that points to the end of the age when Christ returns. He warns that we will suffer persecution at the hands of family, friends, and governments, but if we endure through faith, we gain eternal life.
