The Cost of Following the Lord

Overview: Judges 13-15, Luke 9:37-62

Samson was the twelfth and final judge, fighting the Philistines himself instead of leading an army of Israelites. He embodied the downward spiral of Israel, calling upon the Lord when he needed help, yet running from the life God had called him to live.

In Luke, Jesus continues his ministry of teaching, healing, and making disciples in Galilee. As He prepares to fulfill his ultimate mission of the cross, Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem.

Observation and Activation

Samson was marked for special service to God when an angel told his mother he was to be a Nazirite (see Numbers 6). Sadly, Samson breaks all three requirements of a Nazirite by cutting his hair, touching the dead (Judges 14:6-9), and drinking alcohol (Judges 14:10). Samson represents the ways Israel as a nation has turned away from the Lord.

In Luke, Jesus encounters three prospective disciples who want to “follow” Him, until they realize the cost is too high. What cares of this world prevent you from following Jesus and proclaiming the kingdom of God?
