Don’t Cause Your Brother to Stumble

Overview: Proverbs 13-15, 1 Corinthians 8

The author of Proverbs continues his warnings about the unrighteous and foolish. These individual sayings are often grouped together to give the reader a more complete understanding of the topic. These proverbs give wisdom for the use of the tongue, submission to instruction, and God’s governance of the world.

Paul answers the Corinthians’ question about eating food sacrificed to idols. In Corinth, pagan temples also functioned as butcher shops and banqueting halls, and meat from the temple was sold in the marketplace.

Paul instructs them not to eat in pagan temples because of weaker believers who may have just recently turned from idol worship to the Lord. He exposes their "knowledge" as arrogance if they do not use it to build one another up in the love of the Lord.
