God is Merciful

Overview: Jonah 1-4, Revelation 8

The book of Jonah tells of the forgiveness and mercy God offers to everyone, everywhere. Jonah, an Israelite prophet, rebels against the Lord. But the pagan sailors and Ninevites show a fear of the Lord and repentance. Jonah learns a lesson on the Lord’s compassion when God spares repentant Ninevah.

In Revelation, Jesus opens the seventh seal, introducing a vision of seven angels in God’s heavenly temple. This temple’s altar raises the prayers of the suffering church to heaven, where God hears their cry and sends judgment on the earth. With each trumpet, God sends a preview of the devastation to come to those who do not repent. But God restrains His wrath, showing His compassion for the earth by giving a chance for repentance.
