Numbers 1 and Numbers 2

The book of Numbers gets its name from the Greek title of the book, Arithmoi. This title is due to the censuses found at the beginning and end of the book. However, the Hebrew title Bamidbar meaning “In the Wilderness” gives a better summary of the story.

The Israelites were preparing to enter the Promised land that God had promised Abraham. Their sin and unbelief delayed their entry and cost many lives. The wilderness wasn’t ever meant to be a destination, but a temporary place to pass through.

Moses begins by taking a census of all the tribes of Israel. The census fulfills God’s promise of many descendants to Abraham (Genesis 22:17) and prepares Israel for a war of conquest.

This list of names and numbers shows the reality of the Lord’s presence with Israel as they prepare to enter the Promised Land.

Mark 1:1-20

The Gospel according to Mark is named for its author, John Mark, a disciple of Peter. Early church history records that Mark wrote down as much as he could remember of Peter’s words. The Gospel of Mark gains its apostolic authority from its connection with Peter.

Mark’s states its main theme is in its opening line, that Jesus is “the Son of God.” (Mark 1:1) Throughout the story, Mark sets out to show Jesus’ identity as the son of God and his call to discipleship. Mark frames his story to force its readers to decide whether they will follow or oppose Jesus.

Because Mark originally wrote for a Roman audience, he wrote in a style they would understand. He uses a fast-paced narrative (the word immediately is used 41 times) to create a sense of urgency in its readers to decide who they say Jesus is.

“And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” - Mark 8:29
Make It Personal
  • Do you submit to God when His plans look differently than your plans? What are some things you are having trouble fully surrendering to God?
  • Fully God and fully man, Jesus always looked for ways to identify with us. Baptism was one of the ways He did that. Have you been baptized? If not, are you considering taking that next step?
