Exodus 34, Exodus, 35, and Exodus 36

The Lord invites Moses to join Him once again at Mount Sinai. As He renews the covenant with Israel, He further reveals his name and character (Exodus 34:6-7). This revelation of the Lord’s steadfast love will become a crucial part of the Old Testament that is referred back to by many other biblical authors.

After 40 days and nights, Moses comes down from Mount Sinai. His face was so radiant that he had to cover it with a veil. It was clear Moses had been with God.

Moses asks the people to gather all that they have to contribute to the building of the tabernacle. The people respond by bringing all that they need, and more; so much so, that Moses has to tell them to stop. Moses then calls to the builders God had equipped (Bezalel and Oholiab) along with others to construct the tabernacle as God had told them.

“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” - Exodus 34:6-7
Matthew 23:1-22

Jesus warns the crowds to obey what the Pharisees teach but to not replicate what they do because they are hypocrites. The Pharisees seek attention and praise, yet Jesus his disciples to be humble in how they serve and give honor to the Father, where it is due.

Jesus continues by condemning the Pharisees directly for how they dishonor God by the way they lead others astray. Jesus says that all who profess faith in God are accountable to Him, so a complex system of oaths is but a superficial covering for their dishonesty.

“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” - Matthew 23:12
Make It Personal
  • When was the last time you had time alone with God? Consider scheduling some time of solitude in the coming days where you can hear from God clearly.
  • You’ve been gifted and called to serve God’s church. What is God calling you to do? What gifts or skills do you have that will help you do it?
  • When was a time where you were looking for honor rather than humility? Take inventory of your daily life, and ask God to show you how you might humble yourself.
