Exodus 37 and Exodus 38

The narrative gives exact measurements for each item that was to be a part of the worship of the Lord. The ark, the table, the lampstand, the altar of incense, and all the furniture of the tabernacle display God’s divine precision.

The bronze basin was made from mirrors that Israelite women obtained when they plundered the Egyptians in Exodus 12:36. The exact role of the women who ministered in Exodus 38:8 is unclear, but their offering contributed to the worship of the Lord.

The level of detail in these chapters communicate the importance of the tabernacle as the dwelling place of the Lord with His people.

Matthew 23:23-39

Jesus continued His criticism of the scribes and Pharisees. They made sure they tithed exact quantities of small herbs and spices, yet neglected to practice justice, and mercy.

The Pharisees paid so much attention to external purity, yet on the inside, their hearts and minds were corrupt and self-focused. They spent so much time focusing on appearing righteous that they missed God when He came in the flesh.

Jesus condemns their feigned reverence for the Old Testament prophets. Jesus references the murders of Abel (Genesis 4:8-11) and Zecheriah (2 Chronicles 24:20-22). He is saying that from the beginning to the end of the Hebrew Bible, the leaders of Israel have consistently rejected the kingdom of heaven.

Make It Personal
  • What small details of your life do you need to invite God to speak to today?
  • Spend some time thinking about whether you are more concerned about your own image, rather than reflecting the image of Jesus to the people around you.
  • Is there a part of your faith that is more focused on outwardly looking good for others instead of inwardly directed at pleasing God?
