Genesis 39, Genesis 40, and Genesis 41

Potiphar placed Joseph in a position of great responsibility because he recognized the relationship Joseph had with God and the way God blessed him. Potiphar was pleased with Joseph’s work and the blessing God placed on his house because of him until Potiphar’s wife wrongly accused Joseph of sexual assault.

The accusation landed Joseph in prison. While serving the prison guard, God gave Joseph the interpretation of two dreams that proved themselves true and eventually led to Joseph being invited into Pharaoh’s house. Pharaoh placed his confidence in Joseph after he interpreted his dreams, and put him in charge of the land of Egypt, to protect the land from impending famine.

Joseph knew what it was like to live in the favor of men; he knew what it was like to be accused by men. Joseph knew times of comfort; he knew times of great want. One thing remained constant in Joseph’s life. He lived in a relationship with God and the favor of God. No matter the circumstances of Joseph’s life, we see God was with him.

“Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh and said, ’It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.’ The second son he named Ephraim and said, ’It is because God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.’” -Genesis 41:51-52
Matthew 13:34-58

Jesus used parables to explain spiritual truths. In these parables, He described the great value of His kingdom and compared His true followers to good seed among weeds. He described His followers as the good catch of fish that are kept when others are discarded.

Just like Joseph, those of us who have committed our lives to Jesus live through seasons of ease and difficulty. We are sometimes surrounded by weeds and troubles, but we have hope because God is always with us, working in our lives, and we will “shine like the sun in the kingdom of [our] Father.”

Make It Personal
  • Take time to reflect on the ways God has blessed you. Thank Him for those blessings.
  • Think of a difficult situation in your life. How did God work? How do you know God was with you?
  • How can you encourage someone else in their walk with God?
