Exodus 5 and 6

Moses and Aaron, following God’s directive, go to Pharaoh and ask him to release the Israelites for a feast to the Lord in the wilderness. Pharaoh quickly denies this request, saying that he does not know “the LORD” (Yahweh), so why should he obey Him?

Discouraged, Moses turns to the Lord full of questions and anxiety. But the Lord reassures Moses that He will be faithful to deliver his people from Egypt. God gives Moses a set of foundational promises in Exodus 6:2-8 that have formed the people of God for generations. The Lord promises to bring them out, deliver them, redeem them, and establish a relationship with them. He promises to do all these things so that the people of Israel know that He is the Lord their God.

Matthew 17

The Transfiguration of Christ takes place on a mountain with Jesus, Peter, James, and John. Jesus becomes glowing and radiant, displaying a reminder of HIs glory before he became a man and a preview of His future exaltation.

Elijah and Moses appear, representing the Law and the Prophets to show how Jesus is the culmination of the Old Testament hopes for a Messiah. They hear God’s voice say, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” (Matthew 17:5) This event confirms Peter’s prior confession that Jesus is the Son of God.

Make It Personal
  • Have you ever felt that a situation got worse even though you obeyed God’s instruction? How can you cling to His promises in those situations?
  • What are you facing this year that requires you to have faith, even if it is only the size of a mustard seed? (Matthew 17:20)
  • Pray today that God grows your faith as you face these events.
