Fishers of Men

Joshua 13, Joshua 14, and Joshua 15

The third major section of Joshua begins with instructions from the Lord about how to divide the land between the tribes. Each tribe is allotted its inheritance of the land, except for the Levites; their inheritance is the Lord Himself.

Caleb, who reported to Moses with faith about the Israelites conquering the land in Numbers 13, receives his inheritance.

These chapters outline the territory to be occupied by each tribe as a fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham to give the land to his descendants. They have conquered the land, now they can inhabit it.

Luke 5:1-16

Jesus calls His first disciples. He demonstrates His authority through a miraculous catch of fish.

Peter shows that he trusts Jesus despite an unsuccessful night of fishing. When his nets come up so full of fish that they start breaking, Peter recognizes that he is in the presence of God. Jesus calls Peter, Andrew, and their partners James and John, and promises them that from now on, they will be catching people for God instead of fish.

The next account is of Jesus’ healing of a leper. He tells the man to show himself to the priests to be declared clean but to tell no one else. As more people seek Him out, Jesus seeks out desolate areas to be alone and to pray.

Make It Personal
  • God provided territory for each tribe of Israel as their inheritance in the land. Do you trust Him to provide for you?
  • Are you willing to drop everything to follow Jesus?
  • Do you seek out solitude to pray and fellowship with God?
