Exalt the Lord, Not Ourselves
In 2 Kings 9, Jehu is introduced as a king appointed by the Lord as an instrument of judgment against Israel because of its sin.
John reminds the reader that Jesus is the focus of the gospel message.
Observation and Activation
The Lord used Jehu to purge the idolatry from Israel. Although Jehu was God’s instrument of justice, he ended up focused on himself and continued the sin of Israel. Finally, Joash will become a good king in Judah.
As Jesus’ ministry began to grow, some of the followers of John the Baptist were concerned that the crowds were more interested in Jesus than John. John’s response was, “He must increase and I must decrease” (John 3:30). John knew that his role was to point people to Jesus.
What could we do today to point people to Jesus?
