The Truth Will Set You Free

Overview: 1 Chronicles 17-19, John 8:21-36

With all Israel united under David’s kingdom, the Lord promises that one of David’s descendants would sit on the throne forever. The retelling of David’s wars includes stories that show how God’s promises to David are being fulfilled.

As Jesus testifies to His identity as the Messiah, the Jewish authorities are divided as some oppose Him and some believe Him. To those who believe in Him, Jesus offers freedom through obedience to His word.

Observation and Activation
“When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son.” - 1 Chronicles 17:11-13

Before one of David’s sons will build a house for the Lord, God promises to build up David’s house by establishing his throne forever. This promise is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus as the descendant of David (Romans 1:3). But in Chronicles, the more immediate interest is on Solomon as the chosen temple builder.

In John, Jesus promises us that if we abide in His Word, the truth will set us free from slavery to sin. How has abiding in the word of God set you free from sin in your own life?
