The Dangers of Pride

Overview: 1 Chronicles 20-21, John 8:37-59

1 Chronicles presents David as a warrior king whose victories contribute to preparations for the temple. Satan tempts David to number his army, trusting in his own strength instead of the Lord’s.

In John, Jesus continues to face opposition from the Jewish authorities because of His claims to be the Messiah. He says that those who do not believe in Him are children of the devil.

Observation and Activation

David is a great king who loves and trusts the Lord. After military success, Satan tempts David to take a census of his army. This census was sinful because it arose from David’s pride rather than the Lord’s command.

In John, the Jewish authorities also let pride get in the way of seeing Jesus as the Messiah. Is pride keeping you from following Jesus? Is the Holy Spirit speaking to you about an area of pride in your life?
