2 Chronicles 10-12, John 11:45-57

Children of God

Overview: 2 Chronicles 10-12, John 11:45-57

After Solomon’s death, Chronicles focuses on the kingdom of Judah until their eventual exile. During the reign of Rehoboam, the kingdom is divided because he abandons the law of the Lord.

In John, Jesus raising Lazarus is the ultimate sign that points to His identity as the Messiah. The Jewish leaders resolve to arrest Jesus for blasphemy.

Observation and Activation

Even though Rehoboam failed as a leader, his example shows how repentance may lead to restoration. Chronicles wants the reader to see that Rehoboam’s repentance and humility turned God’s wrath from him (2 Chronicles 12:12).

Caiaphas, the high priest, did not even realize the full significance of his prophecy that Jesus would die for Israel and the Gentiles. He had in mind a political sacrifice that would appease their Roman oppressors and keep the peace that kept them in power.

What does it mean to you that we are children of God because of Jesus’ sacrificial death?
