God’s Eternal Rest

Overview: Lamentations 1-2, Hebrews 3

The book of Lamentations is a collection of five interconnected poems that mourn the destruction of Jerusalem. Babylon destroyed Jerusalem as part of the Lord’s judgment of His people, and Lamentations grieves sin and its consequences. The main theme of the book is found in its center, that belief in God’s mercy and faithfulness is the key to a restored relationship with Him.

Hebrews shows how Jesus is superior to the Mosaic law and superior to even Moses himself. Though Moses was a faithful servant of the Lord, Jesus is the faithful high priest and Son of God, so He is worthy of our worship. But this comes with a warning. Moses’s generation failed to enter God’s promised rest because of their unbelief. So we must be faithful in our generation and the next to believe in Christ to receive His future, eternal rest.
