New Mercies Every Morning

Overview: Lamentations 3-5, Hebrews 4

The book of Lamentations provides words for the grief and mourning of the exiles at the destruction of Jerusalem. Yet, hidden in the heart of the book is a glimmer of hope. Though the people have endured suffering, they have also experienced God’s faithfulness. After witnessing Jerusalem’s suffering, the shine of sin has worn off. The book concludes with a plea from the people to the Lord for restoration.

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
    “Therefore I will hope in him.” - Lamentations 3:22-24

Hebrews shows how Jesus is superior to the Mosaic law, focusing on Him as our great High Priest. The author gives an appeal to the reader to enter God’s rest, explaining the already but not yet nature of the kingdom. Fortunately, Jesus is our great High Priest who is holy and sympathetic to us. If we put our trust in Him, he restores our relationship with God.
