Our Great High Priest
Overview: Ezekiel 1-2, Hebrews 5
The book of Ezekiel is named after the prophet, who was among the exiles in Babylon. The purpose of Ezekiel’s message is to restore God’s glory among His exiled people and the nations surrounding them. The Lord will restore His people, not because of anything they have done to earn it, but because He is good and deserves the glory. In Ezekiel’s opening vision, he receives his call from the Lord to prophesy to His stubborn and rebellious people. He calls Ezekiel to be faithful to His word, no matter what opposition he may face.
Hebrews shows that Jesus is superior to the Mosaic law because He is our great High Priest who is holy and sympathetic to us. He explains that Jesus was appointed to this role by God the Father, as David prophesied in Psalm 110. The author warns the reader about the danger of falling away from the faith, urging us to increase in our love and knowledge of God.
