The Mystery of Godliness
Overview: Jeremiah 25-26, 1 Timothy 3
Jeremiah confronts the people of Judah and opposes their false beliefs. He prophesies that the Lord will send the people into exile in Babylon for 70 years. He warns them not to confuse the existence of God’s temple with God’s approval of their behavior.
Paul describes to Timothy what a gospel-centered church should look like in Ephesus. He gives qualifications for overseers, focusing on the character of these men rather than the duties of their role. He also gives the qualifications for deacons, who were responsible for various areas of service in the church (Acts 6). Paul writes about the mystery of godliness, urging Timothy and the church to be representatives of this truth revealed in Jesus.
