Take Every Thought Captive
Isaiah reveals God’s judgment and grace for the world, as He is the Judge and Savior of all nations. Isaiah begins his second series of oracles (or judgments) about the nations. He reveals the deeper truth of their inner character.
Jerusalem is included in these oracles, as the Lord’s Holy City that is supposed to be the light of the world has grown dark. God’s people reject His calls for repentance and instead turn to counterfeit happiness in rebellion against Him (Isaiah 22:12-13). Paul sees this attitude in the Corinthian church when he quotes this passage in his correction of them (1 Corinthians 15:32).
Paul appeals to the rebellious minority in the Corinthian church who are rejecting his gospel and authority. In defense of his humility, he shows that the fruit of our ministry is more important than a flashy appearance or impressive speech. In defense of his authority, he calls us to seek the approval of the Lord rather than men.
