Trusting God or Trusting Works?

Overview: Isaiah 35-36, Galatians 3

Isaiah continues to ask Israel: will they trust God or the nations around them? In Isaiah 35, he promises there will be rejoicing when God establishes His kingdom on earth. Isaiah 36 contains a historical account of the siege of Jerusalem by Assyria (around 700 B.C.).

The siege would not be successful, because God judged the pride of the Assyrians. Isaiah shows how we can practically trust in God because He is faithful to keep His word.

Paul warns the Galatians not to put their trust or confidence in religion and outward works. Their hope in Christ has nothing to do with their actions, but everything to do with God’s actions on their behalf.

Paul points to the gospel in the Old Testament, showing that Abraham was counted righteous because of his genuine faith, not the law (Genesis 15:6). He then quotes Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Habakkuk to prove that righteousness comes only by faith in the atoning work of Jesus.

“Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’” - Galatians 3:11
