Genesis 5 and Genesis 6

The world’s population grew as Adam and Eve went forth and multiplied, just as God told them to. All of mankind comes back to this union, making Genesis 5 the beginning of our family tree.

As humanity multiplied, so did the sin that entered the world with Adam and Eve. God sees the world he created and the human family destroying itself with evil and sin, and makes the hard decision to do something about it (Genesis 6:5-7, Proverbs 3:12).

As God looked across the earth, only one man still wholeheartedly loved and obeyed Him, and that was Noah. So God tells him to build a boat big enough for himself, his family, and two of every animal. And Noah does.

An ark isn’t built overnight. People saw Noah at work and heard about the coming flood, but no one repented. Only Noah and his family believed and were saved (1 Peter 3:20).

Matthew 2

Jesus’ birth brought life and hope into the world, but it also brought destruction and heartache.

The wise men followed the star to find the new king. When they saw Jesus and his mother, they presented gifts and worshipped him. They saw Jesus for who He was and would be — savior of the world.

In contrast, King Herod had children killed out of fear that this new king would one day take his place. Imagine the sorrow and pain families endured as Jeremiah’s prophecy came to pass:

“Rachel is weeping for her children;

    she refuses to be comforted for her children,

    because they are no more.”

Make It Personal
  • Do you ever feel alone in your faith like Noah must have felt? Where do you turn in those moments?
  • How has following Jesus led to hope and heartache in your own life? How have you seen God’s faithfulness in those situations?
  • Herod felt threatened because he didn’t understand the kind of king Jesus would be. Have you ever gotten defensive or felt threatened by something God said? Does seeing the lengths God goes to save His people change the way you read His words?
  • As you pray today, ask God: “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law” (Psalm 119:18).
