What to do when you can’t see God

Years ago, my parents and I were walking with my children around our town’s fall festival. My dad pushed the double stroller in case they got tired. My enjoyment of the festivities was interrupted when I realized I didn’t see my son.

Total panic gripped me. I asked my mom where he was and we immediately began looking everywhere and screaming out for him. He didn’t answer my calls. I jumped to the worst conclusion: he was gone. Seconds seemed like minutes as we searched.

My dad’s voice broke through our panicked cries. “What are you doing?” As we explained our panic he said, “He’s right here.” I had put him in the stroller and forgotten.

I was frantically searching for him and he was right there in front of me; I just needed to stop, calm down and take a closer look.

Don’t we do that with God? Trouble comes and we freak out. We may even cry out, “Where are you?” Or, we go about our daily lives with little thought of Him. We desire the miraculous and miss it all around.

Are You Missing God?

Even when Jesus was on Earth, people missed Him. Jesus spoke about this to the Pharisees (Matthew 12:38-42). They asked Him for a sign of who He was. He rebuked them because even those in the past who were taught through prophets and teachers believed. These men were standing with Him and didn’t see Him.

God says in Isaiah 55:8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways...For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Just because we can't see God doesn’t mean He’s not with us.

God may not show up in the way we expect. Our minds may get bogged down with daily tasks and cares. Not seeing God doesn’t mean He’s not with us. Stop, calm down, and take a closer look. You will find Him.

Are there areas of your life that seem void of God? God is not missing. Ask God to show Himself to you in every situation and in every season.
