"How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word." -Psalm 119:9
We all ask these questions:
"How can I live the best life possible?"
"How can I live my life free from sin?"
"How can I avoid regret and guilt?"
The enemy wants us all to be reminded of our sin and how awful we have been. Playing dirty is his specialty, and he'll do whatever it takes to make you remember that sin you once struggled with or that time you messed up. He wants you to stumble down a path of sin and not walk with God. But no matter how hard he tries, or what he throws at you, he's no match for the power of God's truth.
In Christ, our old lives are erased and we are made new in Him! We are free from any past sin!
God doesn't leave us defenseless. He gives us the Bible, the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17). It is the truth, God's truth, that makes the lies of the devil melt, and conquers any entangling sin (Hebrews12:1).
How do you use it?
1) Read
Being in the word every day is essential whether it be for ten minutes or an hour! This is how God teaches us to guard ourselves against any temptation or lies from the enemy. This is also how we grow and mature spiritually.
2) Study
Reading is one thing, but the deeper you dive into scripture and seek to understand it, the easier it becomes to guard yourself against sin and lies. You can do this in a couple of ways:
- Memorizing scripture allows God’s word to become a constant reminder of His truth that is written on your heart!
- Read books, commentaries, or blogs about what you're reading to make understanding easier!
3) Community
You can't do life alone, so get a friend involved!
- Have an accountability partner or someone who can help you make sure you're in the word consistently.
- Join a Bible study or home group and study the scriptures with others; it helps when you know others are doing it with you.
God gave us these ways to use His word. Why? Because He loves us! We can guard ourselves against stumbling down a path of sin by keeping ourselves in check with His truth. Sure, we may mess up from time to time, but God is abundant in love, grace, and mercy. He's always quick to forgive us when we repent and get us back on our feet in the right direction.
