Top Resources on Politics

No matter where we fall politically, we can all agree that America has never felt more divided. These resources were compiled to help us, as Christians, understand our role and responsibility during this politically volatile time.

1. How to handle politics, religion, and criticism without getting distracted (Article)
Public policy does not change someone’s heart. If we argue convince someone to change their mind, but their heart does not belong to Jesus, then nothing of eternal significance has happened.

2. Who would Jesus vote for? (Article)
Many politicians act like they speak for God. If you oppose them, then you must oppose God. The reality is God can speak for Himself, and He does so in the Bible.

3. Dear God, hear my prayers for our nation’s leaders (Devotional)
When we commit to praying for those in authority over us, we not only have the power to change a country, we get to see God’s faithfulness in hearing our cries and acting in our lives.

4. Why Politics Can’t Drive the Gospel (Article)
It would be a tragedy to get the right president, the right Congress, and the wrong Christ. That’s a very bad trade-off. The gospel makes us strange, but the gospel doesn’t make us actually crazy.

5. How Christians Can Prepare for the 2020 Election (Article)
With the 2020 election just a year away, it’s incumbent on the church to reflect on how our political approach can be more shaped by Christ than by cable news.

6. Obey as People Who Are Free (Video)
In this “Look at the Book” on 1 Peter 2:13–17, pastor John Piper reveals the wonder of Christian freedom and the witness of being subject to human authorities.

7. How to Live Under an Unqualified President (Article)
The Christian faith was born, and has flourished, under regimes less qualified to lead than Donald Trump. The movement that Jesus Christ unleashed in the world, when he died and rose again, does not depend on qualified human government for its existence or power.

8. Gospel of The Kingdom (Video)
This video traces the origins of the word “gospel” and how it ties the story of the Old Testament together with the story of Jesus and His announcement of God’s kingdom. Jesus brought God’s rule and reign to the world in a very upside-down way, which is the best news you could ask for.

9. This Cultural Moment (Podcast)
A podcast about following Jesus in the post-Christian world. “This Cultural Moment” is a collaboration of Bridgetown Church in Portland and Red Church in Melbourne, Australia.

10. The Vanity of Political Power (Devotional)
Every four years in the United States, billions of dollars are spent by presidential candidates who are vying for the office of chief executive of the nation. The power that high office brings with it is a temptation that many find irresistible.
