How to be ThankFULL when you’re heartbroken

Psalm 34

Broken hearts come in all shapes and sizes, but not one goes unnoticed by Jesus. Hearts break at end of a romance, a broken friendship, or the death of a loved one.

When our hearts are broken, there is room for Jesus to work. A broken heart is an open heart. We don’t have to be thankful when we are heartbroken, but we can be thankful for the One who mends our broken hearts with His ferocious love (Psalm 34:5).

Jesus’ love for us is the greatest love story of all time. He loves us so much it hurts (literally). Jesus was pierced to a cross for our sins. He died so we could truly live. We are all “broken” hearts because we live in a broken world. But we have a Savior whose love never runs dry.

People in our lives will come and go, but Jesus’ is the only relationship that can’t be taken away. He remains with us and in constant pursuit of us (Psalm 34:18). When our identity is in Jesus, we don’t have to be a slave to the way people have wronged us. We know our worth and identity come from Him so our hearts are free to respond with grace and love.

Broken hearts can lead to blessings, including a deeper relationship with Jesus or a deeper knowledge of who He is. We get to taste and see His goodness when our hearts are vulnerable and seeking Him (Psalm 34:8). We get a glimpse of real love right here on Earth.

Our hope is an everlasting hope in Jesus. One day, we will be reunited with Him and get to experience His goodness all the time.

Reflect

  • Where are you finding your identity?
  • How much of your value comes from Jesus? How much comes from the relationships in your life?
  • What is one way you’ve seen Jesus mend your broken heart?
