No sin is too bad

From Jeremiah: A 33-Day Devotional

In Jeremiah 3, God’s people had really messed up. God had invested a lot in them. He freed them from slavery, led them into a new home and, yet, they turned away and worshipped other gods. God had every right to turn them away.

Instead, in Jeremiah 3:12-13, God says, “I am faithful,” and, “I will not be angry forever.” He asks the people to return to Him and to acknowledge their mistakes. If they will do this, God even promises to cure them of their backsliding.

The point is this: When God invests in His people, nothing can hinder this – not even His people themselves (Philippians 1:6). The same principles that applied in Jeremiah 3 still apply today: Turn back to God, and He will take you back. Don’t accept His grace just to keep on sinning (Romans 6:15-18). Give your mess completely to Him, and He will even free you from your guilt (Psalm 32:5).

God was faithful to keep His promises to Israel in the Old Testament, and He is faithful to keep His promise to us today. God sent His Son, Jesus, to die on a cross for our sins. Romans 10:9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Nothing can get in the way of that. Not even us. Jesus will never turn away those who come to Him.

Reflect:

• Does a past or present sin come to mind when you think about something that is too bad for God to take you back? Confess your sin to God, and trust Him to forgive you and even take away your guilt.
• Are you struggling with a recurring sin? Who can you turn to this week for help? Talk to a trusted Christian friend or ask someone in the Care Room to pray with you on Sunday.
• Maybe you’re reading this, and you’ve never asked Jesus into your life. Today is the day to do it. Jesus can’t wait to welcome you into His family, take away your guilt and sin, and fill you with hope for the future. Learn more about salvation here.
