Session 12
Let’s Make A Joyful Noise
From Join the Chorus!
“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!” - Psalm 95:1
Who can forget the words of the mean old Grinch?
“And then, they’ll do something I hate most of all.
Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small,
will stand close together with Christmas bells ringing.
They’ll stand hand in hand and those Whos will start singing!”
Trying to silence their melody, the Grinch stole every single gift in town. Thinking his evil mission was a success, he returned to his mountaintop lair. He thought He had stolen the source of their joy, but instead of hearing the sound of crying, he hears them singing:
Fahwho foraze, dahwho doraze
Welcome Christmas, come this way
Fahwho foraze, dahwho doraze
Welcome Christmas, Christmas day
These lyrics might not make sense to us, but they were a joyful noise from the Whos of Whoville. There’s a beautiful lesson in this childhood Christmas classic. It’s not our surrounding circumstances but the depth of our joy that matters most. When our joyful noise is rooted in the unshakeable identity of Christ, nothing can steal our song.
There is power in our joyful noise. It is a powerful weapon against the enemy who wishes to silence us. God truly is the “Greatest of All Your Gifts”. And just like those “Whos”, even if other ‘gifts’ are taken from us, nothing can steal the greatest gift of all: His presence. “God With Us.” The only response to that kind of good news is to lift our voices, no matter what they sound like, and make a joyful noise together!
