Make Music in Your Heart
From Join the Chorus!
“Be filled with the Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.” - Ephesians 5:18-19
Why is singing such an important part of Christmas? Every December, Christmas music fills every store, every radio station, and every town square. In a culture of skepticism, critique, and complaining, there’s something about Christmas that makes us want to sing.
In Ephesians 5:19, Paul instructs us to, “Address one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing.” Does this mean we’re supposed to live in a perpetual musical, breaking out into song whenever we greet someone? Is it necessary to greet others with singing?
When we are under the influence of the Holy Spirit, the natural overflow is joyfulness and thanksgiving. The Spirit sanctifies us and the result is a heart filled with melody. Compared to the fear, insecurity, and skepticism of the world, this overflowing joy sounds like music flowing from us. This melody in us can’t help but overflow to others. So, yes! Let us sing and make music to the Lord and to one another.
