Session 1

Jesus is greater than everything

From NewSpring at Home: A Study on Colossians

Scripture

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” - Colossians 1:15-17

Observation

Colossians 1:15 says Jesus is “the image of the invisible God.” Hebrews 1:3 says Jesus has “the exact imprint of his nature and upholds the universe by the word of his power.”

Before Jesus, God revealed Himself through the Law and the prophets. But when Jesus came on the scene, He tangibly revealed who God is. He is God in the flesh!

Jesus was present at creation. He came before all things and reigns supreme over all things. To worship Jesus is to put Him in His rightful place. He is worthy of our praise.

Application

  • When we’re worried about the future, stressed at work, or tempted to sin, remember that everything in this world, and not of this world, is under Jesus’ authority. He has power over anything we face.
  • Is there any area of life you’ve forgotten Jesus is supreme over?
  • What do you need to surrender to Him today?

Prayer

Jesus, I exalt you. Thank you for reconciling me to the Father. You reveal His character and love for me. You love me so much you died for me! It is easy to allow my mind and heart to become wrapped up in _______________________________________. I surrender this to you. If there are other areas of my life where I’m holding back or not seeing your power, please show me. You are good, and I want to surrender everything to you.
