Session 28

Do you have what it takes?

From Preparing Your Heart to Lead: A 28-Day Devotional

From “Star Search” to “American Idol” to “So You Think You Can Dance,” every talent competition looks for more than raw ability. To make it in show business, you also need the “it” factor. A special charisma that pulls in the audience and leaves them wanting more.

That “it” factor is the difference between a great singer and the next American idol, between a great dancer and America’s favorite dancer. And if we’re honest, we sometimes judge church leaders on the same criteria.

But what makes for good TV isn’t the same as what makes a good leader. We don’t need charisma, confidence, or a dramatic backstory to make it as group leaders. What we need more than anything else is an intimate, personal relationship with God.

In Exodus 33, Moses confesses that God’s presence is what sets His people apart. And it’s God’s presence in our groups (not our stunning personalities) that sets our meetings apart from any other dinner party or book club.

God was not a distant being controlling events and circumstances so Israel would end up in the Promised Land. God knew Moses and looked favorably on Him. God also loved His people and cared for them, spending time with them and guiding each step of their journey (Exodus 33:8-12).

People might come to a group because the teacher is wise or the food is good, but people will keep returning to a group where they are known and they experience God’s presence. Because no matter how good we think we are, God is better (Exodus 33:19-22). He is the real “it” factor.

Reflect:

  • What do you think makes someone a good group leader? How has your answer to that question changed over the last 24 days?
  • How is your relationship with God? Do you spend time together? Do you speak like you would speak to a friend? (Exodus 33:11)
  • What’s one way you’d like to know God better?
