Session 10

Everyone’s eyes are on you

From Preparing Your Heart to Lead: A 28-Day Devotional

Have you ever noticed that little kids love to copy their parents? Whether it’s talking on a pretend phone or cooking food in their play kitchen, children are always watching and imitating.

We never really outgrow the practice of watching and imitating, though we become more selective on who we copy. We can all probably think of a leader or mentor we looked up to because they possessed qualities we wanted in our own lives.

In Hebrews 13:7, the writer encourages us to imitate the faith of our spiritual leaders after considering the outcome of their way of life. In other words, we should imitate those who follow their own advice and do well.

Paul, one of the great leaders of the early church, boldly asked others to follow him as he followed Jesus (Philippians 3:17). He knew good leaders lead by example (Titus 2:7 and 1 Peter 5:2-3). Good leaders’ lives are marked by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

As you lead your group, consider that others will be watching your life. People in your group may not have grown up in church or had anyone to show them how to follow Jesus. They will be watching you.

A good example is worth twice as much as good advice. Just like you watched and imitated the leaders and mentors who have invested in you, others will be watching your life and imitating you.

Reflect:

  • Are you living a life you want others to imitate? For example, do you spend time reading the Bible? Are you pursuing your spouse (if you have one)? Do you trust Jesus with your money?
  • Do you follow your own advice? Are there areas in your life where you say one thing and do another?
  • What is one change you can make today to become a better example to the people in your group?
