Rejoicing When the Lost are Found
Overview: 1 Samuel 21-23, Luke 15:1-10
David escapes to the shrine of the Lord from Saul, who is trying to kill him. David gathers 400 men to join him, and Saul executes the priests at Nob for assisting David.
In Luke 15, Jesus tells two parables that helped people understand the way that heaven rejoices when even one sinner repents.
Observation and Activation
“Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” – Luke 15:10
Ahimelech the priest gave David the bread of the Presence (Leviticus 24:5-9) used to minister to the Lord. Ahimelech was bending the rules because only priests could eat the bread and only in a holy place. Later, Jesus endorses Ahimelech’s decision to put mercy before ceremonial law (Mark 2:25-26).
Jesus seeks the lost and heaven rejoices when they are found. As you reflect on the reading today, ask the Lord to lead any “lost” family or friends to turn from their sins and become found.
