The Ruin of Idolatry

Overview: 1 Samuel 27-29, Luke 16:1-18

In 1 Samuel, the narrative contrasts Saul’s behavior when he no longer has word from God with David’s patience as he awaits his return from exile.

In Luke, look for how Jesus addresses the idol of money and how God views things people put above Him in their lives.

Observation and Activation

Discouragement and despair drove David to run to the protection of the Philistines. Because of Saul’s persecution, David is safer with Israel’s enemies than with the people he has been anointed to lead. 

Jesus reveals the Pharisees’ hearts in telling the parable of the dishonest manager. He encourages his disciples to focus on eternal wealth more than earthly riches.
