Words of Life

Joshua 23 and Joshua 24

In these chapters, Joshua gives his final words to the people before he dies. In Joshua 23, he transitions the leadership of Israel to the next generation and in Joshua 24 he renews the covenant between Israel and the Lord.

When speaking to Israel’s leaders, Joshua emphasizes that they should live and lead according to the law of Moses. They are to cling to the Lord and be careful to love and worship only the Lord as their God.

In his covenant renewal between the Lord and Israel, Joshua recounts all that God had done for the Israelites since the days of Egypt. He charges the people to fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness.

“Choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” - Joshua 24:15
Luke 7:1-30

In Luke 7, three different encounters that Jesus has during His ministry help readers answer the question, "Who is this Jesus?"

First, a Roman officer came and asked Jesus to heal one of his servants. He demonstrated his faith in Jesus’ authority, trusting that his servant would be healed with only a word from Jesus. Jesus admired his faith and healed his servant.

Next, Jesus has compassion for a widow that lost her son and resurrects him from the dead. This prompted much praise to God for His compassion and this miracle.

Finally, Jesus confirms his divine identity to John the Baptist and validates John’s ministry.

“What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’” - Luke 7:26-27
