God Keeps His Promises

Deuteronomy 1 and Deuteronomy 2

The book of Deuteronomy is Moses’s words to the Lord’s people before they enter the Promised Land. The speech reminds them of the Lord’s faithfulness, promises, and laws.

Moses begins by reminding them of their first attempt to enter the land God promised them, and how they were too afraid because of the enemies there. The Lord kept Israel in the wilderness for 40 years, until the former generation passed away.

Giving direction as they went, God helped the Israelites navigate the land and the different peoples they passed on their journey. The people of Israel obeyed God’s directions on which areas to pass through, and which to conquer. God came through for them in every instance of strife.

“There was not a city too high for us. The LORD our God gave all into our hands.” - Deuteronomy 2:36
Mark 10:1-31

Jesus leaves Capernaum and teaches to the crowds that gather around him in the region beyond the Jordan River. He teaches about divorce, reminding his challengers that it is God who brings a couple together. Jesus shows that only those who receive even his most difficult teachings with faith like a child will enter the kingdom of God.

As he leaves, Jesus is approached by a man who asks how to inherit eternal life. After testing the man, Jesus challenges him to give away everything he has and to follow him.

When the man refuses, Jesus uses hyperbole to show how difficult it is for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. He concludes with the paradox that those who give up their treasure on earth will receive a treasure in heaven.

Make It Personal
  • Think about a time that God blessed you even after you had been disobedient. Take some time today to thank God for his faithfulness.
  • What does it mean to have childlike faith? How can we believe God, despite our disbelief?
