The Signs of the Messiah

Overview: 2 Kings 15-17, John 4:31-54

In Israel’s last days, the unstable government of the northern kingdom has returned because their hearts have turned from the Lord. Judah also does not keep the commandments of the Lord but follows Israel into moral and religious decline.

John continues to show Jesus performing “signs” (or miracles) that point to Jesus as the Messiah. In this story, Jesus heals the son of a Gentile official, showing that His Gospel is for the whole world.

Observation and Activation
“The Lord will strike Israel as a reed is shaken in the water, and root up Israel out of this good land that he gave to their fathers and scatter them beyond the Euphrates, because they have made their Asherim, provoking the Lord to anger.” - 1 Kings 14:15

The northern kingdom of Israel has reached its tragic end. Israel’s exile was prophesied long ago (1 Kings 14:15). Yet, the Lord’s faithfulness and character delayed this judgment to give them every chance to repent. Sadly, they complete their rebellion against God and are exiled from the Promised Land because of it.

The signs and wonders performed by Jesus led the official in this story to believe in Him. What signs has Jesus done in your life to invite you to place your faith in Him?
