Why do we expect so little?

Overview: 2 Kings 1-3 and John 1:29-51

1 Kings ends as Ahaziah comes to power, and 2 Kings picks up with Ahaziah’s demise. Elisha succeeds Elijah as Israel’s prophet, and Moab rebels against Israel.

John the Baptist, a prophet like Elisha and Elijah, announces that Jesus is the Lamb of God. People start to follow Jesus, and Jesus calls His first disciples.

Observation and Activation

In 2 Kings, Elisha calls providing the land with water “a light thing in the sight of the Lord” (2 Kings 3:18). Not only will God do that, but He will also give Israel victory over Moab.

Then in John, Jesus tells Nathanael, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these” (John 1:50).

God is not limited in power or ability. So why wouldn’t we expect the unexpected? Would we pray differently if we understood how caring and capable He is?
