The Power of the Tongue
Overview: Ezekiel 27-28, James 3
Ezekiel delivers oracles against the nations, showing that all people are under the authority of the Lord. Ezekiel condemns Tyre for having the economic power to stand up to Babylon, but not using this power for God’s glory. The lament against Tyre and Sidon makes clear that in spite of their wealth, they will be destroyed.
James addresses the sins of dissension and slander in the Christian community. He cautions those who teach the word of God that they will receive stricter judgment for what they say. He encourages all believers to tame their tongues, giving examples of things that seem small that have the power to destroy. Wisdom from above produces righteousness and faith, while worldly wisdom is self-seeking.
The tongue can be used for blessings or for curses. Choose someone to bless with your words today!
