God is at Work

Overview: Isaiah 37-38, Galatians 4

Isaiah continues a historical transition between major sections of poetry. God delivers Jerusalem from an Assyrian invasion.

King Hezekiah sought God, and God promised He was at work and would protect His people from the threat. God was the true source of hope during the distress.

Paul encourages the Galatians to resist the seductive teaching of those trying to put them under the Mosaic law. He reminds them that their salvation has changed their standing before God. No longer are they slaves to sin, now they are children of God!

Paul points to the gospel in the Old Testament, using Abraham’s first two sons to show the chasm between being a free child of God and a slave to sin (Genesis 21). He argues that for the Gentiles who have passed from idolatry to worshipping the true God, to turn to the Jewish law would be like returning to paganism.
